Alcohol retail in convenience and grocery stores in First Nations communities

First Nations authority

A First Nation has the authority to decide whether alcohol retail stores are allowed in their community. If a First Nation decides that alcohol retail stores should not be allowed within their community, the Band Council may pass a resolution and send it to connect@agco.ca. Once we receive a resolution, we will not issue licences for convenience or grocery stores to sell alcohol within that First Nations community.

Band Councils may also provide a resolution to change their decision at any time.

Please refer to section 78 of Regulation 746/21 under the Liquor Licence and Control Act, 2019 (LLCA) for full details.
