In keeping with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario’s (AGCO) commitment to modernize its approach to regulating the Ontario liquor sector, and in accordance with the Registrar’s authority, the policy on permissible Sunday retail sales hours in the province is being amended.
Effective December 2, 2018, off-site winery retail stores, Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) stores (including agency stores), The Beer Store, and authorized grocery stores (including wine boutiques) will now be permitted to sell liquor between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Sundays. Previously, the permissible hours of sale on Sunday for these retail stores was 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
This policy change means that all stores selling liquor in Ontario will have the same permitted Sunday retail sale hours as on-site manufacturer’s retail stores (i.e., authorized stores located at a winery, brewery or distillery), and it also harmonizes Sunday hours with the permissible hours for the rest of the week. This will ensure a consistent policy for all retail stores selling liquor and provides greater flexibility for businesses and additional convenience for consumers.
Individual retail store locations may choose to shorten their hours of operation within the permissible hours of sale. The hours of sale for certain retailers may also be restricted as a condition on an authorization.
