The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has learned of confirmed cases of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) neurologic disease at a private farm in the Regional Municipality of Niagara (see Outbreaks | Equine Disease Communication Center , Alert 4253). The facility owner has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity procedures.
While no racehorses have tested positive at this point, horsepeople are reminded to remain vigilant and institute appropriate biosecurity measures and should consult their veterinarian for advice. EHV-1 is a highly contagious virus. If you have any concerns about the health of your horse, immediately contact your veterinarian.
The AGCO will continue to monitor this situation, and any further developments affecting horse racing participants will be reported.
