On January 28, 2025, a change to the Registrar’s Standards for Grocery and Convenience Stores (Standards) relating to the surrender of licences by holders of a Grocery Store Licence or Convenience Store Licence came into force.

Under the updated Standards, Grocery Store and Convenience Store licence holders are required to immediately surrender their licence to the AGCO if they stop operating the business associated with the licence, unless an application is made to transfer the licence to another entity.

New Standard:

Standard 1.4 (New) - Surrender of Licence on Cessation of Business Operations

Licensees who cease to operate the business to which the licence applies shall immediately surrender the licence to the Registrar, unless an application is made to transfer the licence.

Additional Information:

To surrender a licence, Grocery Store and Convenience Store licence holders must log in to their iAGCO online account and submit an application for a Voluntary Surrender of Licence.

A Grocery Store licence and a Convenience Store licence may only be transferred to another person if that person is the purchaser of the grocery store or convenience store. If there has been a sale of the business and the purchaser wishes to be transferred the existing licence, the purchaser must submit a Transfer Application through iAGCO.
