March 7, 2018 –The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is pleased to release a summary report of the work performed by the Health and Safety Working Group over the last five months.
As part of the ‘Moving Ahead: Horse Racing Regulation in Ontario’ project and in response to industry feedback as outlined in the Findings Report released in February of 2017, the AGCO established this working group in September 2017, to discuss industry-related health and safety issues and to provide the AGCO with advice on potential reforms.
In particular, the group was mandated to review and provide advice on the following topics, incorporating to the extent possible, the needs and best interests of the industry as a whole:
- Enhancing the health and safety of equine athletes;
- Enhancing workplace health and safety (human participants);
- How the industry as a whole can work to enhance the life cycle of a racehorse; and
- Opportunities for industry collaboration to develop health and safety resources for the sector.
The report released today presents the Working Group’s recommendations stemming from the issues and ideas that were brought forward throughout the engagement process as well as the AGCO’s plan for the implementation of the recommendations.
The report may be viewed on the ‘Moving Ahead’ project page.
The AGCO is committed to enhancing the fairness, integrity and safety of horse racing in Ontario, while at the same time enhancing public confidence, reducing administrative burdens, and modernizing horse racing regulation.
